For the past few years I have been leading a double life. Not in a way that caused harm to anyone, but in the sense that I have been living between two different countries, and two different passions. Or so I thought. As a practitioner of Traditonal Chines Medicine, it's evident I am passionate about holistic health and wellbeing. With a successful practice in NY for the past decade, my job requires me to be physically (and emotionally) present for my patients. The only problem with that is my "conflicting" love for traveling. Now, I don't just mean weekend trips here or there, or a week in the bahamas; I'm talking about world travel. Culture-immersing travel. So, you can see how my passions are torn right down the middle with needing to be present for one, and needing to be..gone for the other--out in the world somewhere.
I'm truly passionate about what I do, and I do believe it's my life's work, so it's not something i'm willing to sacrifice completely, and I'm grateful I can still practice herbal medicine while traveling. However, I can't ignore the inner calling to be out in the world, gaining new experiences. There has certainly been external pressure to decide between my job and my travel life. But, why should I have to? How can I bring these two passions together as one? For so long I have been bending, and jamming, and overlapping these two puzzles pieces just trying to find the perfect angle for them to connect and fit together. Which has led me here. To this very moment, writing on this very page. Because although holistic medicine and world travel seem to be in opposing niches, they're really not so different are they?
In fact, travel is the medicine, is it not? By definition, holistic medicine treats the whole body; meaning the physical, spiritual and emotional. It is the free flowing energy and balance of all, not just the physical. Travel benefits all three. How many times do people under any amount of stress say, "I need a vacation!" What they really mean is the freedom to get away and experience life outside of their town, office, culture, etc. Because travel provides nourishment and healing and reprieve. Just as holistic health encourages balance and alignment within the body, mind, and spirit, travel offers an opportunity for rejuvenation and self-discovery on multiple levels. Engaging with new environments, cuisines, and traditions can stimulate a sense of wonder, reduce stress, and encourage mindfulness – all fundamental components of holistic living.

Physically, travel doesn't just offer increased opportunity for physical activity, but it also allows the body to be in a relaxed state, diminishing the stress response which in itself has positive effects on the body such as better immune function and decreased blood pressure, etc. In fact, studies show that travel can actually decrease the risk of heart disease and improve cardiovascular health, endurance and overall well-being. Exposure to nature let's you breathe in fresh air, soak in sunlight and vitamin D (which is essential to vitality), ground yourself, and experience all the rejuvenating effects nature has to offer. Time zones and more free time can actually help to reset sleep patterns and we all know a well-rested body is better equipped to repair & regenerate, especially when in a relaxed state which is better for recovery. International travel especially, provides the opportunity for diverse cuisines with new flavors and nutrient-rich foods, and exposure to new evironments & pathogens is also strengthening to your immune system and enhances adaptability. I think it's also important to mention the opportunity for decreased screen time as you immerse yourself in the real world around you and soak up every experience without being lost in the digital world. While travel offers numerous physical benefits, it's essential to prioritize your health during your journey. Stay hydrated, get enough rest, protect yourself from excessive sun exposure, and listen to your body's needs. By embracing the physical opportunities travel presents, you can return home feeling refreshed, invigorated, and physically revitalized.
Travel can also offer a wide range of emotional benefits that contribute to mental wellness and personal growth. For starters, the reduction of mental stress & recovery from mental fatigue, which I feel is the spark plug of wanting to plan a trip to begin with. With this comes increased happiness & joy, which is present as early as the planning stages, but continues to snowball with new cultural experiences, breathtaking landscapes, and collecting memorable moments throughout your travels. This sense of adventure, and simple break from routine, gives you the opportunity to fill your cup with cultural connection, reflection, and for some, even an appreciation for home and those familiar surroundings that were becoming mundane. In essence, travel is a powerful mental & emotional tonic. It nurtures a wide spectrum of emotions, from joy and excitement to tranquility and self-awareness, making it valuable for enhancing emotional health and enriching the human experience.
The most neglected aspect of the holistic body is, in my opinion & experience, the spirit. I also believe that travel is possibly the most nourishing to this body, as it offers profound spiritual benefits by facilitating personal growth, self-discovery, and a deeper connection to the earth and the world around you. New environments encourage presence and mindfulness which expands inner peace and positively triggers personal growth. It also provides the time for introspection and self-discovery, allowing reflection of your life goals, values, desires, and current relationships. Travel will have you embracing the unknown, seeking solitude, connecting with nature and experiencing moments of transcendence. Natural phenomena, sacred sites, and cultural rituals provide the opportunity to connect to something greater than yourself, find purpose through a renewed perspective, and fill your cup with gratitude and humility. Ultimately, the spiritual benefits of travel stem from its ability to awaken a sense of wonder, encourage self-exploration, and deepen your connection to the world and its diversity. Whether you seek spiritual growth through contemplation, or communion with nature and new cultures, travel can serve as a transformative journey that nourishes your soul and enriches your understanding of the interconnectedness of all life.
The profound connection between holistic health and travel lies in their shared ability to nurture the entirety of the human experience. Travel, with its potential to inspire personal growth, expand horizons, and foster cultural understanding, mirrors the holistic approach to well-being that seeks to harmonize the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of an individual. As travelers immerse themselves in different landscapes and cultures, they engage in a form of experiential healing that can catalyze positive transformations, reinforcing the interwoven relationship between holistic health and the transformative power of travel. This is what I hope to show you through my personal travel stories here on the blog, but also truly excited to help you plan your own adventures so you can experience it yourself, and nourish your mind, body & spirit--until your cup runneth over.
